Bumper plates explained: rubber, urethane and competition, and which floor needs which
What separates a training bumper from a competition plate, why urethane bumpers are thinner, and how to specify bumper plates for a functional training floor, a box gym or a weightlifting club.

A bumper plate is a plate designed to be dropped. That single requirement produces three products at three price points, and buyers frequently specify the wrong one. This guide separates them.
Rubber training bumpers
A dense, low-bounce rubber body around a steel hub, moulded to the IWF 450 mm diameter. Available in black with raised lettering or colour-coded by weight. These are the volume bumper for functional training floors, box gyms and school weight rooms. The light plates (5 and 10 kg) are thin and flex more, so ask for a reinforced technique plate where a 5 kg will be dropped on its own.
Urethane bumpers
Same steel hub, but a cast polyurethane body. Urethane is denser than rubber, so the plate is thinner at the same weight and more of them fit on a sleeve. It also holds shape and colour after years of drops and does not mark flooring. The cost is higher, which is why urethane bumpers are specified for premium branded floors rather than schools.
Competition bumpers
Built to a tighter weight tolerance, with a large steel centre disc that takes most of the mass, a thin rubber body and the full IWF colour scheme. They are the thinnest of the three and the only ones acceptable for sanctioned competition. Weightlifting clubs and performance centres specify them; most commercial gyms do not need them.

Two specification details
Bore: bumper plates use a 50.4 mm bore so they slide freely on a 50 mm sleeve. Hardness: state whether you want a harder, lower-bounce compound (platforms) or a slightly softer one (rubber flooring). Both are produced; the factory needs to know which.
